Uses and Gratifications theory is to explain that people choose particular media instead of other alternatives is based on their psychological needs. This paradigm assume that user are goal-oriented and clear about their needs, interest and motive of using the particular media. User needs such as purposive value, self-discovery, entertainment value, social enhancement, and maintaining interpersonal connectivity that are adopted to determine the use of particular media platform (Cheung & Lee, 2009). Uses and Gratification theory is focusing on why people actively look for specific media to satisfy their needs and what do people do with the media. However, this theory does not explain about the impact of media have on users such as the impact of social media to users. Therefore, this research is to study the impact of social media on students’ academic performance and mental health problem.
