Three Pillars Essay
As one of the students of the Grand Canyon University and a future healthcare administrator, my desire is to help patients in benefiting from healthcare services and advocating for their needs. It is important for any leader not to lose sight of meeting the greater social good, which will bring about justice and fairness to everyone (Grand Canyon University, 2018). The Colangelo College of Business has implemented three pillars to prepare students as they enter the business world. With the completion of my master’s degree, I will be able to apply the three pillars, which include servant leadership, ethics, and entrepreneurism into my career (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Training students on these pillars will prepare them in becoming more informed and skilled in different aspects of administration, which is important in attaining success in the business areas. Students will also be more inspired with the added value which is important in achieving organizational success as well as positively impacting the surrounding community (Grand Canyon University, 2018).
Entrepreneurism involves the aspect of creativity and innovation. As a leader, it is important for one to take risks, as this is what brings a difference between a successful business and a stagnant business. Creativity also allows organizations to access new opportunities, which are important in the growth of the organization (Salminen et al., 2014). Developing new ideas is vital for giving an organization a competitive advantage over other organizations. As a healthcare administrator, it is important to create the space and other necessary resources required to promote creativity in the organization. This will provide efficient ways in performing certain activities, which will improve the achievement of healthcare goals (Salminen et al., 2014).
As a leader, it is also important to support creativity and innovation in an organization as it is important for organizations to take risks in order to make important improvements. Everyone in the organization can be allowed to participate in the entrepreneurial aspect and share his or her experiences related to the entrepreneurial aspect (Salminen et al., 2014). Due to the aim to achieve and compete in global standards, entrepreneurism is important by allowing organizations to access the latest trends and concepts, which are used to improve patient experience. Creativity should be made a continuous process and leaders encouraged to persevere even after going through tough times in their careers as failure provides leaders with an opportunity to grow in their leadership skills (Salminen et al., 2014).
Ethics involves a value system by which people judge and evaluate behaviors in a community or an organization. Ethical principles in an organization are meant to guide individuals on the right as well as wrong behaviors (Braveman ; Gruskin, 2003). This is because most organizations, which include the healthcare facilities, must be guided by certain principles to avoid discrimination and enable each one to access the services fairly. Ethics also govern healthcare administrators to make decisions, which are not influenced by one’s thoughts and feelings (Braveman & Gruskin, 2003). There are consequences, which follow unethical behavior, which are aimed at preventing individuals from engaging in these behaviors. Due to people’s nature to use greed and malicious information to get high profits and have a competitive advantage over other firms, ethical standards have been implemented in most organizations, which deal with public services (Braveman ; Gruskin, 2003).
This is meant to prevent the organizations from taking advantage of the public. As a healthcare administrator, it is important to follow the required ethical standards at this will benefit the employees and the patients as well. This will also build a good reputation and social responsibility, which will also lead to a good relationship with the surrounding community (Braveman ; Gruskin, 2003). One of the ethical principles include being honest and truthful which is also a Christian principle based on the commandments of God which prevent individuals from lying to one another (Colossians 3:9). This is meant to safeguard the patients and other employees as well. It is important for leaders to conduct their duties and responsibilities with integrity, which is also necessary in avoiding legal issues, which may accompany unethical decisions and practices (Braveman ; Gruskin, 2003).
Servant leadership involves the ability of a leader to put the needs of others before their own needs. This is important in creating a better working environment, which is good in enabling the employees to better relate with their leaders (Kerfoot, 2002). When employees are taken care of, it encourages improved performance from the employees as their needs are well taken care of. Servant leadership has been indicated as one of the main leadership approaches for increased performance as well as achieving set goals and objectives. Students will learn how servant leadership influences individual behavior and how it can be implemented to improve social responsibility (Kerfoot, 2002).
As a future healthcare administrator, I plan to apply servant leadership in healthcare management by providing opportunities to the employees as well as improving healthcare service delivery, which will improve patient satisfaction (Kerfoot, 2002). I will also create a healthcare brand, which also focuses on giving back to the community to also enrich the surrounding communities. Too many healthcare leaders neglect their employee’s needs discouraging them in improving their performance (Kerfoot, 2002). This is because as most leaders reach their top positions, they become poor listeners, which has been attributed as a cause of ineffective leadership. Satisfied employees will treat their patients better which will in result lead to improved results for a healthcare organization (Kerfoot, 2002).
Application of Pillars in Student’s Career or Industry Contribute to the Greater Social Good
The three pillars, which are entrepreneurism, servant leadership, and ethics, are important pillars for the success of a business as they also impact different aspects in an organization. The three pillars relate to the mission of the Grand Canyon University, which aims at creating responsible leaders from the context of Christianity (Grand Canyon University, 2018). A good understanding of these three pillars will enable a leader to gain important knowledge, which is necessary for leadership growth. Incorporation of the three pillars will help leaders in becoming more creative, performing their duties diligently, and serving others, which will help the leader in achieving the organizational goals (Grand Canyon University, 2018). With the three pillars as part of the educational system, students will be better prepared as they prepare and venture in their professions.
Entrepreneurism will enable an organization to reach global standards through the integration of the most current information technology, which will also give the organization a competitive advantage over other organizations (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Ethics will enable a healthcare administrator in performing his/her roles with integrity, which will create a good reputation and trust between the organization and the community. This is important in creating a good relationship and a good environment to enable the organization to operate effectively (Braveman ; Gruskin, 2003). Servant leadership will contribute to social good by leaders showing good examples on leadership approaches, which can also help nurture, other leaders in the community. Servant leadership will also enable a leader to focus on the community’s needs, which is aimed at benefitting the community (Kerfoot, 2002).
