Some people spend their whole lives thinking about how to be successful in life and want to have a happy, healthy life, do meaningful work, and be financially stable but never figure it out. Everybody wants to be noteworthy, positively affect people around him or her and want to accomplish something magnificent with his or her life. Critical self-review, self-management and life-long learning are the key to be successful in the professional as well as personal life.
Self-review is always a challenging task and many people fail to succeed in this regard due to lack of self-esteem. At the same time, it is necessary to conduct self-review in order to identify the self-improvement over the course of time along with the problems, weakness and strength of the individual. Critical self-review can be done through the continuous process of self-evaluation, self-monitoring and self-reflection. Self-evaluation is the basic assessment of one’s execution, in which we can do through rounding out self-assessment forms, journalizing, taking examinations, making inquiries, and through discussions. When we evaluate ourselves, we can have a brief detail about what we know, don’t know and able to perceive our own qualities and shortcomings which eventually helps in gaining new knowledge and set the goals that we believe and can do. Self-monitoring is the continuous process of observing one’s task through the detail observations and recordings to pick up the understanding about our quality and shortcomings. Self-reflection is the conscious exploration, analysis and judgement about one’s experience which eventually helps in problem-solving and a basic reasoning ability. In Dewey’s words critical reflection is an “active, persistent and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it, and further conclusions to which it leads” (Dewey 1933). Over the span of our lives, we are evaluated by many individuals and in some cases, we may observe that we didn’t get a decent result, or the judgment was one-sided. In any case, when one assesses oneself, there is no extension for any bias and there might be some new parts of our identity that we might be familiar with. It is imperative, in this manner, that we energize the idea of self-assessment in foundations with the goal that each individual gets a genuine opportunity to examine himself. Self-assessment is a vital device for the constant personal development of an individual.
To lead our life towards the path of success, we need to develop the art of self-management which eventually makes our personal and professional life productive, fruitful and happy. The world’s most prominent pioneers are specialists at self-management. Any position of specialist or duty regarding others expects you to have the capacity to oversee yourself, before overseeing others. Self-management is defined through six competencies which are self-control, transparency, adaptability, achievement, initiative, and optimism (Daniel Goleman and his co-authors, 2015). This can be calibrated as in order to acquire self-management skill, we must have control over our emotions, maintain trustworthiness act harmoniously with one’s qualities, adaptability in taking care of progress, readiness in improving to meet the standard of perfection, readiness and persistence to grab opportunities notwithstanding obstacles and problems. Effective self-management has huge impact on the professional work. To be successful in professional work, everybody must develop the skills and attitudes about figuring out how to deal with your responsibilities and time; developing the inspiration and capacity to learn new things all alone in the work; and constructing and sustaining own personal network Robert Kelley, 1998.
