Nothing is ever what it seems

Nothing is ever what it seems, people, places and things can surprise you. Sometimes it can be a good or a bad thing. Most times, people assume things without really knowing the story behind it. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird there are many examples of people judging others based on assumption. There were three main people that were judged based on appearance, Dolphus Raymond, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Dolphus Raymond was thought to be a drunk who could not think straight. Many people believed that he would drink whiskey out of a paper bag to deal with his wife’s suicide. In reality, he would drink coke and allow people to believe what they wanted to. His wife committed suicide because he was having an affair with an African American woman and all of it was too much for her. He lived in the black community and pretending to be a drunk was his only protection, it hid him. On page 268 Dolphus said, “They could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live.” This shows that he was more mature than many people of the town of Maycomb, he didn’t view people based on the color of their skin.
Another person looked upon wrongly was Tom Robinson. He was an African American accused of raping a white girl. The entire town viewed him as trash and no one believed that he was truly innocent because of his skin color. There was no possible way that Tom Robinson could have been able to rape the girl. Because he was a black man going against a white family, the truth meant nothing to anyone.
