Kate Chopin wrote “Story of An Hour” in 1984, and it was published at the same years. Kate Chopin has displayed in the story many beautiful images about the new life in future, the reaction of the woman after she knew that her husband has died in the accident. The cause that makes the successful of the story is the author has used irony in “The Story of An Hour”,” irony is a figure of speech in which word are used in such way that their intended meaning from the actual meaning of the words. It may also be a situation that ends up in quite a different way that what is generally anticipated”. The irony is used in “the story of an Hour” through the reaction of Mrs. Mallard when she first heard the new of her husband’s death, the setting surrounds her, and she feels free from her husband.
First of all, the readers are extremely surprises about the reaction of Mrs. Mallard after she received a news that her husband on the “killed” list. At the third paragraph of the story, the author indicates the difference behavior between her and normal woman when they get sad messages,” she did not hear story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance”. When she first heard the message, “she wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment. In her arm’s sister”, “she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her”; everyone will think that Mrs. Mallard was upset and wanted to be alone in the room as the common reaction. In contrast, the author revealed that Mrs. Mallard was happy, and she draw many wonderful views in her head, “she could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver the new spring life”, “when she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted slips. She said over and over under her breath: “free, free, free””. Mrs. Mallard is the woman in nineteenth century with powerless, marriage without love, and she has to be submissive her husband. Therefore, she imagines a good life will come in the future that she will get freedom after her husband’s death.
Instead of being dark and full of grief, the environment was described warming and lifeful in the story. Although she just recently heard about her husband’s death message, she still has enough conscious to taste the rain, “the delicious breath of rain was in the air”. After many years being unhappy marriage, Mrs. Mallard was dreaming a bright life. Under her eyes, everything is pretty and glittering. she sees the “open window”, “tops of trees”, “patches of blue sky”; the author signifies as the new beginning for her. The reader expected that she mounts the husband’s death with heartache; however, she is thinking about a new life, “there would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself”
